THERAPEUTICS
AND HUMAN HEALTH PRODUCTS FOR BIOFILM PREVENTION & MICROBE CONTROL
The
need for new antimicrobial
drugs has increased tremendously because of the continual emergence
of bacterial pathogens that are resistant
to an array of drugs. This heightened resistance phenomenon
poses a significant threat to the general public and, especially,
to hospitalized patients. Biological Targets, Inc. (BTI) has identified
and validated an essential anti-biofilm/anti-microbial drug target
that has great potential to control clinically relevant bacterial
and fungal pathogens.

The
use of BTI’s target for development of an anti-infective involves
a strategy that has not been exploited previously. The approach
utilizes both the target and a related metabolic pathway for inhibiting
or completely blocking the metabolic capacity of a pathogen. BTI’s
anti-microbial target is attractive particularly for developing
anti-biofilm products because b iofilms are involved in 65% of all
human bacterial infections. They also are major contaminants of
implantable biomedical devices. In addition, BTI’s target has great
potential to control bacterial and fungal pathogens of agricultural
and industrial
importance. BTI’s
new anti-microbial target is absent in humans and animals, making it
attractive for the development of safe broad-spectrum antimicrobial
products.
